24 weeks, 3 days: Viability, baby (and other big news)

My friends!

Where do I start?

I think I’ll start here, with my two little beans. I added a couple of more photos to their page from my most recent scan if this does not satisfy your baby photo desire. I also added approximately a gajillion bump photos. But, anyway, here they are. Baby B reaching back to find and touch Baby A. Incredible.

These inmates are now technically considered “viable.” I am so so thankful to have made it to this point. However, it is not good enough by any means. My dad, the pediatric intensivist, jokingly (as is his style) tries to make me feel safer by saying things like, “pshhh, 24 weeks? no problem.” But a 40-50% survival rate is still very far from ideal, and my line of work makes me quite familiar with the lasting consequences of extreme prematurity. The consequence of birth at 24 weeks gestation is either death or moderate to severe neurodevelopmental disability for about 70(ish)% of babies. (You’re welcome.) So while I am thrilled that this means that I will, in all likelihood, have two children by mid-March (WHAT. SO WEIRD), I would prefer for them to keep cooking until mid to late February AT LEAST, pleaseandthankyou.

Now. Onto less morbid stuff.

Remember the envelope?

Yup. We looked at it.

We did it on a whim, while riding in the car, when we at last decided we were ready. It was evening. We had spent the afternoon on an impulsive mid-week hike. The drive home from the park was about 2 hours, and halfway back we decided it was time. We pulled off the of the highway and into a well-lit parking lot, set up the video feature on my camera, and placed it on the dash. With the dogs snoozing in the background, I pulled the envelope out of the dashboard, reached in and took out one of the folded peices of paper, and handed it to The Artsy Engineer. The video is hilarious (and so sweet), because apparently when I get nervous, I get bossy. And when AE gets nervous, he makes fun of me. It makes for good viewing. First, he opened his, and then I opened mine, and then we switched. And then we yelled. And high-fived. And cried and kissed. I believe at some point The Artsy Engineer pumped his fists and shouted WE WON!!!

My friends, Baby A is a girl. And Baby B is a boy.

And they are so beautiful.

Congratulations!!! That is so exciting! Full of good news! Two healthy babies and viability wow!!! Now I have to ask a dumb question. In the picture it actually looks like the babies are touching of overlapping. But obviously they can’t be because they are in different sacs, right!? So happy for you!

    • Yeah, weird, right? I don’t know. Magic of modern photography, I guess. My thinking was just that the image is on a setting (or angle) where the very thin membrane that separates them, evidently the strength (or is it size?) of three layers of plastic wrap stacked on top of each other, is in between them here but not visible.

  • Steph Mignon says:

Oh I have tears in my eyes as I comment! I am so very very happy for you guys! Congrats, a million times congrats! I am one week behind you sister and it’s beautiful and amazing and terrifying.

  • nickeecoco says:

  • J o s e y says:

Ahhhh!!! I’ve been hoping you would post soon with this news. I can’t wait to hear how you told all of the family at Thanksgiving! A boy & a girl – incredible!

  • jebhow515 says:

Omg! You made me cry (18w preggers and slightly emotional). I have a twin niece and nephew and they are the most awesome humans I currently know! This is such wonderful news!

  • Gypsy Mama says:

Woo hoooo!!! What incredible news!!! I just love the photo of them touching, there are so many sweet videos on youtube of newborn twin moments like that. It’s just so amazing.

And I know you would have been just as happy had the twins been of the same sex, but I still think you won the lottery with one of each!

    love it all

  • I LOVE THIS POST. a boy and a girl… you did indeed win, my friend. you really really did. see a baby thing you like, it’s kinda-boyish, buy it, cause you got one of those. see a different baby thingy that’s kinda girly, buy it, cause you got one of those, too 🙂
and i think you are being chill enough to gestate those babies to full term! keep us updated, cause lord knows you will have negative minutes of time to do that after they arrive!

  • Jane Allen says:

That is a a really cool picture and awesome news!

  • Daryl says:

Yayyy!! So happy and excited for you! Viability and boy-girl twins. Amazing!

  • That picture pretty much just made my day. It’s so clear! It’s amazing!

Congrats on reaching the milestone of 24 weeks, that is a HUGE deal. Furthermore, congrats on getting one of each… also amazing! I can just imagine how exciting that must have been to hear. Can’t wait for even more updates.

  • missymakes says:

That is so incredible! Congratulations to you and Artsy Engineer. So perfect.

  • Amber says:

Awww, I love the picture! They couldn’t be any more adorable than that. I’ve never really cared about getting a 3D u/s done until seeing your picture! It’s incredible to see them touching like that. Even though you are so right and viability still leaves a long way to go, I am so happy for you to have made it so far! I hope things just keep progressing and they keep growing nice and big. Love your story of when you decided to finally find out what they are. Thanks for sharing!

    • You know, I didn’t really care about getting a 3D scan either. I honestly didn’t think it was a typically offered thing until we were finishing up with our last MFM appt and the tech said, “so do you want to see them in 3D??” Umm, sure?! I was expecting their faces to be creepy, but they weren’t. I look at those little faces nearly every day now.. 🙂

  • bustedoven says:

    I FREAKING LOVE THIS!

  • notpregnantandpissed says:

Aww, one of each?? That’s amazing! You must be thrilled! The picture is so precious too!

  • Yay! A Lentil post! And such a great one! Congratulations to you and the AE on a gorgeous family. Can’t wait to see them out in the world. (Well, I mean, I can wait until they are baked fully, but you know what I mean.). Much love!

  • Annie says:

    Such happy news 🙂 Congratulations!

  • Megan says:

Awesome, one of each!!! So happy for you, and the ultrasound pic is sooo sweet!!

  • jesselyn6585 says:

A boy and a girl? That’s wonderful! Congrats Lentil! And the picture is absolutely adorable!

  • Amanda says:

AMAZING! Congratulations! And a big WOO HOO for viability, but hoping with you that they’ve got a few months left of snuggling together!

  • lydiaseeks says:

You did win :). My brother has b/g twins and they kick SO much ass. Glad to hear everything is still going well!

  • K, Twin Mom says:

Yea! Awesome! Having a boy and girl is amazing 🙂

  • That is awesome!! The best of both worlds! Congratulations to you and your family! Also, that sonogram is amazing!!

  • Jules says:

Totally tearing up here. So happy for you!! Viability is a huge milestone- and here’s hoping those sweet little beans keep cooking for a long time to come!

    • You’re so right, sisterfriend. It is a huge milestone. I feel like I kind of shrugged that off here. But as the days pass since then (and as our “chances” of having a positive outcome increase), I’ve started to comprehend it’s importance. I think I was attempting to protect myself somewhat. Once the infertile…

  • Meredith says:

Jackpot! One of each! Had a huge smile on my face when I read that. Congrats x 2!!!

  • hopingonhope says:

wonderful!! Congratulations Lentil! It is awesome!… A boy and girl each..

  • Ahh! So incredibly happy for you guys! A boy and a girl, just perfect!! Congratulations and keep cooking babies!!!

  • josamarie says:

Congratulations! I’ve been quietly following your blog for a long time, but only just realized that we’re only a day apart! Congratulations on your miracle babies, one of each…what incredible news!

  • Unprolific says:

That is an amazing picture! I am 3 months behind you w/ twins- 11 weeks 2 days today. I love seeing your bump pics & anticipating what is to come. Any other advice you have? I’m finally getting used to the idea of twins but still quite nervous about it. I hope you are feeling well & resting 🙂

  • redbluebird says:

What a precious picture. Congrats on WINNING! That’s so exciting. It seems like every blogger who is pregnant with twins lately is having one of each. Although two babies at once– no matter what the sex– is pretty awesome. I’m so glad everything is going well!

  • Wonder Womb says:

Awesome news! We are exact opposite, Baby A is a boy and Baby B is a girl. 🙂 We’re about 4 weeks behind you and hoping to make it to 37 weeks (mid April).

  • K&A says:

I screamed when I got to the end. You did win. I am so thrilled for you. What fun! I mean are you immediately shopping like a crazy woman? oh man. I love the idea of finding out privately. so great. Ahhh! I am so happy!

  • julieb79 says:

Ahhhh!!!!! I love it all – the ultrasound photo, your bump progression pics, the gender reveal story – yay yay yay! Couldn’t be happier for you. Congrats to you both!

  • Sarah says:

You won the infertility lottery! Congratulations to you both! (Also, side note, my wife is an engineer but before she decided to go in that direction she was planning on art school – got into a good one, etc. Then she decided to give up the whole “starving artist” thing and become a member of the bourgeois. Whenever you refer to your husband as the Artsy Engineer, I can’t help but think of my Tammy. Anyway. Sorry to hijack the comments!)

  • katherinea12 says:

Congratulations! That’s fantastic, what good news!

  • Isn’t it hilarious how people (medical people, anyway) are so nonchalant about your newfound viability? My pregnancy was high risk and I got a LOT of monitoring, and everyone just threw it out there like, “what are you so worried about! He’s totally viable now!” Ummm. No, I have lunchmeat that weighs more than he does. Let’s settle down.

  • *happy dance* Yay for viability (and as an ex-neonatologist, I know that’s a relative term, but still…), and congrats on the boy/girl set up! I have one of each (and ok, the girl’s only 10 months), but parenting different genders is different fun and challenges, and all the shopping/decorating/crafting fun you can imagine!

  • JustMe says:

Wow. Take a moment and just savor where you are. This is so soectacular. Look at the picture of your son and daughter snuggling. Can you believe it? I ( like everyone else) am so, so happy for you!

  • sarah says:

Granted, I’m postpartum and totally hormonal but…this post made me cry with joy for you guys. So, so happy for these healthy kiddos and for you and the artsy engineer!

  • Morgan says:

Yay for twins!! Being a twin myself, I have such a heart for Momma’s carrying twins! Such a rockstar! Doubly blessed my friend! I just love the first pump- and we won! How great! So excited to watch those babes keep cookin’, and watch you two expand that Artsy, Lentil family of yours! Yay!

  • Infertility Can Suck It says:

Such incredible updates!!! So pleased to find these amazing updates. As an aside, I’m half of a boy/girl twin combo and at 34 we are still best friends. We talk pretty much every day even though we are on opposite coasts. You have amazing little people headed your way and they have built in best friends. 🙂

  • amyallenhorsemanship says:

Hope all is going well. Looking forward to your next update. Hint hint. 🙂
